Obituary for Donald Lutwick
Donald Edward Lutwick
Don passed away peacefully at home on August 20, 2017, leaving a large void in the lives of the many who loved him. Born in Halifax in 1950, he was the son of the late David and Mary (Banks) Lutwick. He grew up in Birch Cove where the woods and waters of the Bedford Basin shaped his adventurous spirit and love of nature. As a youth he was a fearless sailor, a trait that served him well in his career as a mariner. Don served with the Canadian Coast Guard, Mathers, CanMar, Wolf Offshore, Irving, Secunda Marine and in commercial fishing. He was a marine engineer with combined steam and diesel endorsements. In 1971 Don was honoured as having been a crew member on the Louis St. Laurent on the occasion of her voyage to the furthest point north by a western ship. As a member of the Secunda Fast Rescue Team, he was presented with an Award for Valour for a rescue mission in 1998. Don will be remembered for his love of family and animals, community involvement, work ethic and colourful story-telling. Don was also known for his kindness, ability to problem-solve and insatiable curiosity. Don is survived by his wife Sandra (Denison) son Shea (Courtney Gillam), siblings Graham (Paulette Charron), David (Lyndia), Marianne (Stephen Forbes), William (Anne Stevens) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks to Dr. Zhao, Dr. Nolan and the staff of 5A, VGH site for their care. Respecting Don’s wishes, there will be an outdoor gathering in celebration of Don’s life on Saturday, September 9 at 2:00 pm, at 170 Owl’s Head Drive, Southwest Cove, NS, rain or shine. If desired, donations may be made in Don’s memory to Mission to Seafarers, SHAID Animal Shelter or any charity.
