82, of Fox Point passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2018, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgwater. Born June 25, 1935, in Halifax to Harry and Jean (Fraser) MacDonald. Gwen had a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Dalhousie University her Masters of Social Work from the Maritime School of Social Work. Gwen loved life and had a will of steel. She was a quiet hero, always willing to help out and championed different causes near to her heart. She loved to entertain and often hosted friendly games of bridge, as well as many memorable Canada Day, Robbie Burns and Christmas Eve parties. Gwen was famous for welcoming people into her home with a beautiful, warm smile and an open heart. Gwen loved to cook and could often be found in her kitchen preparing a gourmet feast for family and friends, or a pot of soup for her church’s “soup lunch”. Gwen had a passion for travel, whether it was crossing the ocean on the Queen Elizabeth II, trekking around Europe; staying in London, England during her sabbatical; soaking up the sun in the Caribbean, or visiting family and friends all across North America. Gwen found great joy gardening and had some of the finest gardens around. She was very athletic and played a number of sports including: varsity basketball at Dalhousie, field hockey, curling, tennis, bowling and she enjoyed sailing. In her youth she was Head Girl at Queen Elizabeth High School, a member of the Bengal Lancers and later on, the Waegwoltic Club. Gwen began her social work career in Halifax, in adoption at the provincial government social services, and then spent three decades dedicated to social work education at the Maritime School of Social Work of Dalhousie University, as a faculty member and an associate professor, retiring in 1998. Very involved in the social work community, Gwen was a person of integrity in all aspects of her life. Her work was characterized by compassion, respect, and fairness. In addition to her employment, Gwen was involved in the social work community by serving on community boards (Children’s Aid Society of Halifax and Elizabeth Fry Society); was a member of the NS Association of Social Workers (NSASW) having served as a member of the Board of Examiners, President (1991-93), Chair of the Personnel Committee (1991-93) and as Past President and was President of the NS Association for Divorce and Family Mediation (1989-91). In recognition to her contribution to the NSASW/Canadian Association of Social Workers, she received a Distinguished Service Award in 1993. Additionally she was presented with the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada for her significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada. Gwen was predeceased by her husband, Leslie Slipp; her son, Hugh Fitzgerald. She is survived by her children: Greg (St. Louis, MO), Harry (Heather Marshall); Stephen (Maria Medioli); and Heather (Robert Johnson), Ottawa, ON; her daughter-in-law Karen (Chris Rowarth); and her sister Kathryn Graham (MacDonald), Port Hawkesbury. Additionally, her step-children: Susan (Rand Hoenhous), Toronto, ON; David (Annette Morash), Hacketts Cove; Cynthia (Steve Katmarian), Mississauga, ON; Dan (Christina Vali), Port Credit, ON; and Dr. Nancy (Rev. John VanStone), Kingston, ON; nine grandchildren and eleven step-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, February 16th, with the Funeral Service being held at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 17th, both at the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards. A reception will follow the funeral service. Rev. Ellen Wilson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Andrews and St. Marks United Church, P.O.
